Ways to Care For Your Locs At Home
Share
What you do at home matters just as much as what I do in the chair.
Whether you’re rocking permanent locs, starter locs, or using Temporary ones, a proper at-home care is KEY to keeping your locs healthy, fresh, and flourishing.
So here are Top 3 ways to maintain your locs at home.
1️⃣ Keep Your Scalp Clean + Moisturized
Think of your scalp as the soil your locs grow from, if it's dry or dirty, your locs will suffer.
✅ Cleanse your scalp every 2–4 weeks with a sulphate-free shampoo.
✅ Use lightweight oils like jojoba, rosehip, or tea tree to keep the scalp nourished.
✅ Don’t overdo it! A little goes a long way too much oil can cause buildup
Homemade Tip
Mix water + a few drops of oil in a spray bottle and mist your scalp lightly a few times a week
2️⃣Wrap Your Hair at Night
This one’s non-negotiable if you want to protect your crown.
✅ Use a satin or silk scarf/ bonnet, or pillowcase to prevent breakage and lint.
✅ Wrapping your hair helps keep moisture in, styles neat, and frizz down
** Don’t go to bed without covering your locs, that cotton pillowcase is not your friend!
3️⃣ Avoid heavy products & book retwist/ retouch when due.
Less is more with locs. Too many products = buildup, and too much twisting = thinning.
✅ Stick with light, natural products
(no gels or thick creams)
✅ Retwist only when necessary
usually every 4–6 weeks depending on your hair type.
✅ If your hair is feeling dry or dull, a quick homemade spritz (water+ oil) can revive it
Stylist Tip
Focus more on scalp health and hydration than trying to “control” your locs. Let them breathe and do their thing!
You’re not just maintaining a hairstyle, you’re nurturing a journey.
When you follow these simple steps, you’re protecting your investment and honoring your crown just like it deserves.
